Gbagbo's camp welcomes AU decision to set up evaluation panel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The foreign minister appointed by Cote d'Ivoire's incumbent Laurent Gbagbo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Alcide Dje Dje, on Saturday hailed the decision of the African Union (AU) to set up a panel to evaluate the situation in his country following a post- election crisis."It is a wise decision,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Dje Dje told Xinhua as he was informally present at the 16th AU summit scheduled for Jan. 30-31 at the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
"When this is a dispute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it means (there should be) a court. It could be the court of ECOWAS (the Economic Community of West African States) or another court called on to look into who is the real winner. When there are consequences,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], violence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], instability,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], impossibility to govern for example,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the heads of State should be called on to treat the affair,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Dje Dje."They (ECOWAS) pronounced without sending a mission to see what really happened. So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], now we have the African Union to catch up. It is a good news,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
The AU peace and security commission announced Friday that it will set up a panel to evaluate the situation in Cote d'Ivoire and produce a plan of solution within a month. The members of the commission should be decided within 48 hours."If you remember well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the African Union did not really declared (that Ouattara won the election). The Union only endorsed the decisions of ECOWAS. It is different,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
"If Alassane Ouattara were recognized as president elect by the African Union, the African Union would not send a panel of heads of state to evaluate the situation on the ground,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," added the minister named by Gbagbo. He also insisted that each camp should provide enough efforts for a way out of the crisis without conflicts.
"We will continue with our efforts. We should not forget the declaration that the principal effort should come from the rivals themselves. In particular, the camp of prime minister Ouattara must understand that it concerns our country after all. If one counts solely on the outside to exercise their power on Cote d' Ivoire,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he will never succeed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.Gervais Jean Marie Kakou, minister of foreign affairs named by Alassane Ouattara,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is also informally present at the gathering of African heads of state and government.
Cote d'Ivoire has been trapped in a political impasse since the landmark presidential run-off held on Nov. 28. Both Gbagbo and opposition leader Ouattara claimed victory and swore themselves in as president of the country, and formed their respective government.Gbagbo was backed by the country's Constitutional Council, while Ouattara has the support of the electoral commission and the international community including the United Nations (UN),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the African Union (AU),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the United States and France.
