There are those days that we become sick of being uncivilized video game playing, potato chip munching, and Superbowl watching homeboy and you decide to inject some culture into your system. So how do you start? You take the thickest novel that you can find in your home library. Say, a Don Quixote or an Anna Karenina. The first chapter flies by without a hitch. The language is starting to take its toll come the second chapter but still you manage to pull through. But come the third chapter you suddenly let out a shrill cry, throw the hapless book out the window and start watching some reruns of 'Cops'. Your stint with sophistication began, endured and ended in all but 20 minutes.
Does this mean that all is lost for you? Of course not,Carrera sunglasses! There are many ways for you to get yourself into that reading zone and get yourself a self-made education in no time. Here are a few of them:
- Listen to music that you abhor: The biggest problem with using music as a reading aid is that listening to music you like can distract you from a lot of the things that you are doing, and that includes the novel you are struggling to finish. So what could be better than listening to that horrid Spice Girls records of your youth to get you concentrating on your literature?
- Practice the chapter break: After you finish a chapter, it would be an amazing idea to stop for a while to rest, reflect, and prepare your mind for what comes next. If you are a coffee drinker or a smoker, this would be the best time to pick up your beloved companions. Breaks like these not only give you a few moments peace, they also give you time to ruminate on what happened last chapter and the actions of the characters.
- Character impressions: This may be a bit of a stretch for some casual readers but this is one of the best ways for a disconnected reader to get into the shoes of the characters and almost feel the situation for themselves. Repeating the exploits of your favorite characters would do wonders to get you involved in the story. If you chosen character got hit by a car, you can ask your bodybuilder of a neighbor to give you a tackle. Just make sure you don't go overboard!
For us, Halloween was here. Some of the older folks were concerned about tomorrow night, which was really Halloween night. We had been told, "Tomorrow night you are not leaving this house." The story was the same with all of us. There was a conspiracy among the older folks. They had it in their heads to spoil our tricking, but our plans were already made, and we had taken what our folks had said into account. We would do our tricking on this night, the night before Halloween and forget about the treats of tomorrow night. Our plan was for all of us to get out of the house as quickly as we could after supper. If your folks raised suspicions, then you were to sneak out before supper. After all, what is a meal missed when the fun of Halloween was about to begin?
Just before supper, Wizzer gave our signal then hollered for me from outside the kitchen door just like we had planned. Mom never could say no to Wizzer. I had never told Wizzer about this, but one day I had heard Mom say that she felt sorry for him, what with him being a change of life baby and all. It wasn't my intent to spy on her. This particular conversation was overheard at one of her gabfests with her friend Julia. I was only trying to do what I had been trying to do with no luck at all for as long as I could remember. Namely, it was to see Mrs. Wetzel sleeping and doing something that took some watching and being careful. Just now, they was pitting and peeling peaches and getting them ready for canning.
