Jets: Rex talks up team concept after convincing victory
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Coach Rex Ryan was at the podium when a roar came from the crowd outside the glass-encased room holding the news conference. His quarterback, Mark Sanchez, was making his way into the room, still in full pads and full sweat, a 28-14 win over the Patriots fresh as the September air outside.
"Those people just realized I came in,'' Ryan joked.
But for at least one day, Sanchez was the star attraction. "I just think that he played great, no question,'' Ryan said. "You are going to get some criticism here. But we never stopped believing in him. We know this is the guy that's going to do it for us. We've been saying it all training camp, and tonight we saw it. He was on the money with almost every throw.''
Yet Ryan was most pleased with the number of heroes emerging from the win. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie did a marvelous job on Randy Moss after Darrelle Revis re-tweaked his hamstring injury late in the first half. Tight end Dustin Keller was terrific and Braylon Edwards bounced back from a poor performance against Baltimore. LaDainian Tomlinson once again showed his bounce with 76 yards rushing.
"I thought he was washed up,'' Ryan smiled. "The thing I'm most proud of is that it took every last man in our locker room to get it done for us today. We talked about how it's not about one player or this player or that player. It's about the team. That was so evident today.''
Inside the locker room, Keller agreed that the game was about as close to must-win territory as possible for Week 2.
But the loss to Baltimore didn't humble the Jets. It led to a highly concentrated group showing up for practice on Wednesday. Keller had no problems with the team's chatter leading up to the season.
"If you truly feel like you're the best, why don't you say it?'' Keller asked. "Why don't you go up there and make those comments? It's not just going up there and thinking it gives us some kind of edge by saying that we're the best. These guys truly believe that we're the best.''
"The first week we were so amped up to play,'' Tomlinson said. "That wasn't us. We did a lot of stupid stuff. This game was all about focus and letting the game come to us.''
Linebacker Bart Scott, a vocal leader in every sense of the word, called the previous six days "tough for all of us. We took a lot of criticism,'' [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]

The locker room was almost cleared when Revis emerged from the trainer's room.
He said his hamstring got tight as he tried to keep up with Randy Moss on Moss' 34-yard TD catch with 53 seconds left in the first half. Revis blamed the injury on Moss gaining separation.
"It slowed me down quite a bit,'' Revis said.
Revis was scheduled for a magnetic resonance imaging test on Monday to learn the extent of the injury. "We don't know yet,'' he said.
