Panama issues sanitary alert due to cholera

Panama's government Tuesday declared a sanitary alert to prevent the spread of cholera,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which has been sweeping across Haiti since October.
"Panama is not immune from this disease since it is a transit country,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Panamanian Health Minister Franklin Vergara said when announcing the measure.
Vergara said the measure includes the reinforcement of health checks at the main entry points into the country.
"We have not relaxed (our vigilance),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and we maintain checkpoints in ports and airports in the entire country," Vergara said.
Vergara also urged people to maintain strict hygiene measures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially in the zones affected by the flooding.
The alert also includes a campaign to raise awareness about the disease,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reinforced by surveillance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], epidemiological,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], laboratory, and environment sanitation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as food safety measures.
The Health Ministry also distributed oral rehydration packs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], gastric tubes, and catheters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as part of the alert.
