Dengue Fever Pandemic
In places where there are no adequate medical services, infected persons with severe symptoms of dengue may die from the disease. Healthy victims may only sustain a fever during the first infection, but can become re-infected a second time. An advanced dengue infection can be fatal.
Is it likely that dengue fever could become a serious infectious disease? As the Earth heats from global warming, the risk of dengue fever rises. Residents in impoverished areas with little water supply often hoard water in open containers, providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Many underdeveloped countries do not fumigate areas ridden with mosquitoes. Residents of well-developed areas add to the infestation problem by allowing rainwater to collect in yard debris and containers.

Be aware that mosquitoes infected with dengue bite during the day.

Dengue Virus Symptoms Can Progress to a Severe Form of the Disease
As medical providers in United States administered the vaccine to control H1N1 flu virus in 2009, yet another disease continued gaining strength, giving research scientists reason to be concerned. Dengue fever, a viral infection transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, is on the rise. No longer limited to Central America and Southeast Asia, the disease has spread to other parts of the globe, including Haiti and the United States.
CNN's Rosemary Church reports just how quickly a serious epidemic could escalate to a pandemic in a video broadcast presented by AOL News and posted in January 2010, titled, "Dengue Fever is Booming". Church reports, "Twenty-two thousand people die from the advanced form of dengue fever – that's mainly children, and two-fifths of the planet or 4.5 billion people in 100 countries are at risk from dengue fever."
Infected mosquitoes lay their eggs in warm wet areas where hot temperatures and frequent rainfall create an ideal breeding environment. Tourists and travelers bitten by the mosquitoes carry the disease to other parts of the world. Once a person is infected, he can pass the illness to other mosquitoes. The disease is not contagious, meaning a person infected with dengue cannot pass the virus to another person. Infected humans can be a source of the virus for other mosquitoes for up to six days.
Dengue Fever in the United States
Cases of dengue fever have already been reported in the United States, specifically in Florida and Texas. The spread of the disease hasn't been a problem yet as the mosquitoes are controlled by fumigation. An indoor lifestyle might also contribute to the low number of cases in the U.S. Residents should take safety precautions where mosquito infestation is a problem:
